The microencapsulated flame retardant of the present invention comprises a core comprising a flame retardant and a shell of natural microtubules, wherein the core is encapsulated by a shell. The microencapsulated flame retardant of the present invention can be compounded with a certain polymer substrate by a mixing method to form a corresponding flame retardant polymer composite.
