abstract A syringe includes a generally cylindrical hollow barrel having a hollow nozzle at a distal end. A plunger having an open channel is slidably mounted within the barrel. A needle holder with a needle attached at one end thereof is placed in the plunger channel, the advanced position where the needle protrudes from the distal end of the nozzle for injection, and the needle when the injection is complete. It is movable between a retracted position enclosed in a barrel. A spring retainer is disposed in the barrel. The spring is located within the spring retainer and urges the needle retainer toward the retracted position. The latch latches the needle holder into the spring holder, thereby maintaining the spring in compression. The latch can be released in response to the plunger moving to its fully advanced position, thereby releasing the needle holder and allowing the spring to extend, thereby moving the needle holder to the retracted position.
