abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing acetonitrile in which production of ammonium carbonate is prevented in producing acetonitrile using acetic acid and ammonia. SOLUTION: In a method for producing acetonitrile by reacting acetic acid and ammonia in the gas phase in the presence of a catalyst, a reaction product gas containing acetonitrile, ammonia, carbon dioxide and water is contacted with a strong acid to recover acetonitrile as an aqueous solution.
