An object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing ethylene glycol in higher yield from 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane contained in methanol. In the step of producing ethylene glycol by contacting methanol containing 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane with a solid acid catalyst, the solid acid catalyst to be contacted is H-ZSM5 type zeolite.
