abstract | In an image forming apparatus including an intermediate transfer unit, when a substantially spherical toner is used, even if a recording medium supply failure occurs before primary transfer, the image carrying unit can be kept clean for a long period of time. An image forming apparatus capable of suppressing deterioration in image quality of a formed image is provided. An image forming apparatus includes a photosensitive drum, an intermediate transfer belt, a cleaning blade, a recording medium supply unit, a cleaning auxiliary roller, a recording medium detection sensor, and a control unit. When the determination result indicating that transfer is impossible is output to the control unit, the cleaning auxiliary roller 50 controls the transfer nip portion to enlarge so that the toner image on the photosensitive drum 11 is transferred to the intermediate transfer belt 25. .
