A method for producing a high molecular weight, high-purity polyalkylene glycol derivative for pharmaceutical use. A process for producing a polyalkylene glycol derivative of the formula (X) comprising the following steps. (Step (A)) An alkali catalyst is added to the compound of the formula (Y). (Step (B)) The alkylene oxide is reacted under conditions of 50 to 130 ° C. until n becomes 5 to 500 to obtain a polyalkylene glycol derivative. (Step (C)) The derivative of the step (B) is diluted with a hydrocarbon solvent to remove the remaining water azeotropically.
