Disclosed is a novel copolymer that can be preferably applied to a detergent composition that exhibits excellent cleaning effect even when washed under harsh conditions such as washing with remaining hot water and the like. [Solution] A structural unit (a) derived from a polyalkylene glycol monomer (A) having an organic group having 8 to 20 carbon atoms of 1% by mass or more and less than 90% by mass, containing 10% by mass or more and less than 99% by mass of a carboxyl group A polyalkylene glycol copolymer having the structural unit (b) derived from the monomer (B) as an essential constituent unit.
