In an electric vehicle using an engine and an AC motor as power sources, it is possible to satisfy demands for downsizing and cost reduction of a drive system. The power of an engine 11 is divided into two power transmission shafts 17 and 18 by a planetary gear mechanism 16 and a continuously variable transmission mechanism 19 and a clutch 20 are provided on one power transmission shaft 17 to provide two power transmission shafts. By connecting the output side of 17 and 18 to a common output shaft 21 and connecting the AC motor 12 to this output shaft 21, the drive system is reduced in size and cost. Further, by setting the clutch 20 in the power transmission state, it is possible to perform engine traveling that runs only with the power of the engine 11 or with the power of both the engine 11 and the AC motor 12, and the clutch 20 is set in the power transmission cut-off state. Thus, EV traveling that travels only with the power of the AC motor 12 and regenerative braking that converts the kinetic energy during deceleration of the vehicle into electric power by the AC motor 12 and recovers it can be performed.
