| abstract | A method for esterifying free fatty acids in triglycerides using methanol is provided. A method for esterifying a free fatty acid using methanol. The process comprises (a) a heterogeneous esterification catalyst under conditions suitable for esterification in a reactor, with (i) methanol and (ii) 70-99.8 wt.% Triglyceride and 0.2-30 wt. Contacting a reaction mixture comprising: a triglyceride mixture comprising:% free fatty acids: (b) separating water and methanol from the product stream to produce a dry product stream (C) contacting the dry product stream with methanol to produce a methanol enriched phase and a triglyceride enriched phase; and (d) separating the methanol enriched phase and recycling it to the reactor.
