abstract | The present invention provides an industrially useful method for producing 3,3′-dinitrobenzidine and 3,3′-diaminobenzidine, a dinitrobiphenyl compound which is an intermediate for producing the compound, and a method for producing the same. A process for producing 3,3′-dinitrobenzidine represented by the formula (2), comprising reacting a dinitrobiphenyl compound represented by the following formula (1) with ammonia. (Wherein R 1 and R 2 each represent a branched, ether bond, alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms which may contain a benzene ring, or a phenyl group which may have a substituent, R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different from each other.
