abstract The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine equipped with a piston type balancer and a control device therefor, which is suitable for ensuring good vehicle mountability when the internal combustion engine equipped with a piston type balancer is vertically mounted and securing the use of the piston type balancer as a pump. It aims at making it compatible. A balancer piston is disposed between two cylinders of the internal combustion engine and moves opposite to the in-cylinder piston. A balancer liner 40 is provided which receives the insertion of the balancer piston 38 and is closed at the bottom 40a. The bottom 40a of the balancer liner 40 is disposed at a position lower than the oil level of the oil stored in the crank chamber 32. A breather passage 44 is provided that communicates with the balancer liner inner space 42 surrounded by the top surface of the balancer piston 38 and the inner peripheral surface of the balancer liner 40 and the inner space of the crank chamber 32 above the oil level.
