An object of the present invention is to efficiently obtain a PAS having a chlorine content of 1000 ppm or less in the recovery by the quench method and 2000 ppm or less in the recovery by the flash method while controlling the molecular weight. When a polyarylene sulfide resin is produced by reacting a sulfidizing agent with a dihalogenated aromatic compound and a monohalogenated compound in an organic polar solvent, the dihalogenated aromatic compound is added to 100 mol of the sulfidizing agent. A method for producing a polyarylene sulfide resin, comprising reacting a monohalogenated compound in an amount of from 95 mol to less than 105 mol and from 0.01 mol to less than 5 mol.
