A developer having excellent charging characteristics and a sharp particle size distribution and a method for producing the same are provided. An acid is added to a fine particle dispersion containing fine particles containing a colorant, an aqueous medium, and a surfactant having a critical micelle concentration or less without adding a water-soluble inorganic metal salt or an organic polymer flocculant.
