A capsular polysaccharide extraction method and an extracted capsular polysaccharide are provided. A large amount of capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is isolated from the culture supernatant in addition to Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial cells using base extraction. This method is simple, rapid, reproducible and applicable to various bacterial species. This method also results in a novel CPS that is characterized by not covalently binding to foreign peptidoglycan. The capsular polysaccharide is used in vaccines against bacterial infections.
