The present invention provides a composition for continuously controlling blood glucose, and a method for treating non-insulin-dependent diabetes in mammals. A method of treating mammalian non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) comprising continuously administering glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and related peptides, and the administration of these peptides. (Wherein GLP-1 is converted into a 31 amino acid peptide, including amino acids 7-37 of GLP-1, during processing in the pancreas and intestinal tract, which peptide has insulin activity ( insulinotropic activity), i.e. it may stimulate or cause the synthesis or expression of the hormone insulin).
