PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for extracting and recovering embryonic-like stem cells such as, but not limited to, pluripotent or pluripotent stem cells from a phlebotomized human placenta. The placenta is treated to remove residual umbilical cord blood by perfusing the bloody placenta, preferably with an anticoagulant solution, to wash away residual cells. After collecting residual cells and perfusate from the phlebotomized placenta, embryonic stem cells are separated from the residual cells and perfusate. In addition, a method of using the isolated and perfused placenta as a bioreactor for growing endogenous cells including but not limited to embryonic-like stem cells, in addition to growing endogenous cells in the placenta bioreactor, A method for recovering endogenous cells and biologically active molecules grown from the cells.
