abstract | Aspects of the invention relate to energy storage devices, such as capacitors and accumulators, comprising a composite of elongated conductive structures embedded in a polymer matrix. A liquid containing ionic species is dispersed within the polymer matrix of the product. This liquid can contact the elongated conductive structures within the polymer matrix. When the composite article is used as an energy storage device, a large energy storage can be obtained due to the large surface area at the interface between the elongated conductive structure and the liquid. Embodiments of the present invention allow energy to be stored using composite articles that exhibit both low and high temperature stability, high cyclic repeatability, and mechanical flexibility. This composite article can be non-toxic, biocompatible and environmentally friendly. That is, this composite article is useful for various energy storage devices in automobiles, RFID (wireless authentication), MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), and medical fields. |
