The present invention provides a method of stimulating nerve survival, growth, and regeneration by administration of SLPI to an animal such as a human. These methods can be used to treat various neurological conditions (such as neuropathies and degenerative diseases) in a subject in need thereof. The present invention provides a method of stimulating neuronal axon outgrowth comprising contacting a neuron with SLPI, thereby stimulating axon outgrowth. The invention also provides a method of reducing NF-κB or c-jun activity in a neuron comprising contacting a neuron with SLPI, thereby reducing NF-κB or c-jun activity. |
