titleOfInvention | Combined use of polymer materials and other substances for improved performance |
abstract | Methods are described herein that allow or enhance the ability of a hydrogel to swell in the stomach of an animal and / or increase the amount of time that the hydrogel remains swollen in the stomach. In certain embodiments, a polymer is administered to the animal along with one or more substances that raise and maintain the pH of the polymer and / or stomach microenvironment to induce swelling within the polymer. The polymer may be a homopolymer, a copolymer, a polymer mixture, a crosslinked polymer, or a composite. In one embodiment, the polymer is a superabsorbent polymer (“SAP”). The polymer can also be administered with one or more active agents such as an appetite suppressant. The pH adjusting agent and / or active agent can be administered in the same dosage form at the same time as the polymer, in separate dosage forms at the same time as the polymer, or sequentially. The composition is formulated for oral administration. The formulation can include drugs for delivery to the stomach, such as antibiotics, or the hydrogel can be used as a filler, such as for obesity control. The formulation can be used to increase gastric retention, for example, control of drug delivery. Methods for delivering drugs are also described herein in conjunction with pharmaceuticals for performing the methods of the invention. |
