abstract |
The present application identifies the involvement of the HIFβ homologous Arntl2 gene in type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes. Accordingly, the present invention provides a method for determining a subject's susceptibility to progressive insulin-dependent diabetes based on the expression level of the Arntl2 gene. The present invention also provides a method for identifying a compound that is effective for treating or preventing insulin-dependent diabetes in a subject in need thereof, as well as administering an effective amount of the compound identified by said identification method, to provide insulin dependence. Also provided are methods of treating or preventing diabetes mellitus. The present invention also enhances protection against the development of insulinitis or the development of autoimmune diabetes in a subject in need, including enhancing the expression of the Arntl2 gene gene or modulating the expression of its target gene A method is also provided.
