titleOfInvention | Process for producing polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) |
abstract | The present invention relates to a process for producing a modified polybutylene terephthalate random copolymer from a polyethylene terephthalate component. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a two-step process, wherein a 1,4-butanediol component is reacted with the same component under conditions that depolymerize the polyethylene terephthalate component into a molten mixture, and the resulting molten mixture is subjected to reduced pressure conditions. Modified polybutylene terephthalate random copolymers are produced. In another embodiment, the invention relates to a three-step process, wherein a diol component selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and combinations thereof is fully depolymerized into a first molten mixture of a polyethylene terephthalate component. The first molten mixture obtained by reacting with the same components under conditions to form a second molten mixture is mixed with 1,4-butanediol under the conditions to form a second molten mixture. A modified polybutylene terephthalate random copolymer is produced under reduced pressure conditions. The invention also relates to the composition produced by the process. |
