abstract | The styrene polymer is brominated in a closed reaction system in order to retain the BK coproduct (where HX is HBr or HCl, or both) in the bromination reaction mixture at pressures above atmospheric pressure. The reaction mixture comprising the brominated styrene polymer and substantially all of the produced HX coproduct is preferably released into an aqueous quenching medium. By operating in this way, the reaction is terminated and the brominated styrene polymer of the desired bromine content and substantially all of the HX coproduct are captured in the same operation, reducing the cost of the process equipment.
