Disclosed are compositions and methods for preventing or reducing postoperative ileus and gastric stagnation. Such a composition includes a combination of an oxidized regenerated cellulose component and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID) that acts as an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase enzyme (Cox enzyme) action. The method described above comprises the step of administering the composition in an effective amount directly to the serosal surface of the gastrointestinal or other internal organs.
