An air purification reactor having various improvements is described. In one aspect, the air purification reactor takes the form of a plasma reactor. The plasma reactor includes a porous catalyst disposed downstream of the plasma chamber. The catalyst is configured to greatly improve the conversion of reactive species contained in the fluid stream before it exits the plasma reactor. In another aspect, the air purification reactor includes a photocatalyst and an ultraviolet light source that is distinct from the ionizer. With this configuration, ultraviolet light acting on the photocatalyst causes a photocatalytic oxidation reaction in the photocatalyst, which can reduce volatile organic compounds carried in the fluid stream. In yet another aspect, an improved electrostatic filter is described. The electrostatic filter can include one or more insulated electrodes and / or an improved dielectric formed of non-woven fibers.
