The present invention provides an effective new method for the enhancement of maxillofacial bone, and in particular the augmentation of the maxillary ridge, without the problems associated with prior art methods, and the use of the composition therefor. In one embodiment, these materials include human recombinant platelet derived growth factor (rhPDGF-BB) and a biocompatible matrix. In another embodiment, these materials include rhPDGF-BB, deproteinized bone block or calcium phosphate, and a bioabsorbable membrane. The use of these materials in the method of the present invention is effective in regenerating maxillofacial bone and in promoting the achievement of a stable osseointegrated implant. The mandible or maxilla is a preferred bone for strengthening, and strengthening of the ridge is one preferred embodiment of the present invention. |
