titleOfInvention | Freezing indicator suitable for mass production |
abstract | The freeze indicator uses a dispersion in which solid particles are dispersed in water or an aqueous liquid medium as an active indicator element, which solidifies upon freezing, resulting in an irreversible change in appearance. The liquid dispersion can be contained within the indicator volume with a vapor blocking layer extending around the indicator volume. The vapor blocking layer can prevent loss of liquid vapor from the dispersion and thus prevent the freeze indicator from drying out and malfunctioning. Two- and three-layer laminates with low water vapor transmission rates can be used to contain the aqueous medium. The activity indicator element may be a diluted colloidal dispersion in which a metal such as gold or silver or other inorganic pigment material is dispersed in water or an aqueous medium. Some embodiments avoid the use of dispersants and the like and use an active indicator element consisting of inorganic pigment particles, water, and an optional ice nucleator. If desired, heavy water or deuterated water can also be a component of water. |
