abstract | A method for producing xylene isomers is disclosed. The method generally involves contacting the aromatic compound-containing feedstock with a non-sulfurized catalyst under conditions suitable to convert the feedstock to a xylene isomer-containing product. The catalyst includes a support impregnated with a hydrogenation component. The carrier includes a macroporous binder and a sieve selected from the group consisting of medium pore sieves, large pore sieves, and mixtures thereof. The choice of sieve depends on the dimensions of the molecules in the product that can be expected from the feed, intermediates, and catalytic reactions. If the molecule is considered large, large pore sieves must be used. On the other hand, when the molecule is considered smaller, either a large pore sieve, a medium pore sieve, or a mixture thereof can be used. Macropores within the support have been found to be particularly beneficial as they help overcome the diffusion limitations observed when using highly active catalysts lacking such macropores. |
