M is a rare earth element, Ln is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Eu, Ce, Pr, Tb, Yb, Dy, Sm, and Ho, and 1 × 10 −6 <X <2 × A powder having the general formula (M 1-X Ln X ) 2 O 2 S which is 10 −1 is first prepared. The powder undergoes a heat treatment where the heat treatment is performed at a temperature T ht to form a consolidated body having a closed porosity. The consolidated object is GHIPed to a density of 99% or more of the theoretical density in a GHIPed environment having a temperature T hip of 1100 ° C. <T hip <1500 ° C., thereby forming a densified object.
