abstract An object of the present invention is to increase the oxygen storage capacity of a Ce-containing oxide and enhance the durability of a catalyst. In an exhaust gas purifying catalyst in which a catalyst layer 2 having Ce-containing oxide particles 3 having an oxygen storage / release capability and a catalyst metal 5 is formed on a carrier 1, the catalyst layer 2 contains Ce. A large number of iron oxide particles 4 having a particle size of 300 nm or less in contact with the contained oxide particles 3 are dispersed and contained, and the area ratio of the iron oxide particles 4 having a particle size of 300 nm or less to the total area of the iron oxide particles is observed in an electron microscope. 30% or more.
