The present invention provides a friction material and a resin composition for a friction material, which are excellent in heat resistance and mechanical properties of the binder itself and in good moldability as compared with a friction material using a phenol resin as a binder. A friction material comprising a resin composition for a friction material containing an aromatic imide oligomer having an addition reactive group at a terminal as a binder, and an aromatic imide having an addition reactive group at a terminal. A resin composition for a friction material, comprising an oligomer powder, at least one fiber selected from the group consisting of carbon fiber, aramid fiber, glass fiber, ceramic fiber, and metal fiber, and an inorganic filler.
