abstract | The present invention relates to 1,5-dioxepan-2-one, which is useful as a modifier for biodegradable plastics such as polylactic acid and as a raw material for materials that require biocompatibility such as surgical threads. In a simple manufacturing process, it can be produced in a high yield and safely from easily available raw materials. The cyclization reaction of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate is carried out in the presence of a basic catalyst and an inert solvent at a concentration of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate of 30% by mass or less.
