A method for analyzing and monitoring a heterogeneous sulfated polysaccharide population. A method for analyzing a composition sample comprising a polysaccharide, wherein the structural features of the sample are provided by determining one or more primary products selected from: a. The presence of one or more component sugars or disaccharides; or b. The presence or amount of one or more block components, wherein the block component is a component composed of a plurality of sugars or polysaccharides; c. The presence or amount of one or more sugar representatives, wherein the sugar representative is a sugar modified to enhance detectability; d. The presence or amount of a three-dimensional structure index or a parameter associated with the three-dimensional structure; and e. The presence or amount of one or more modified sugars, wherein the modified sugar is present in the starting material used to make the preparation but has changed in producing the preparation.
