Pathological conditions associated with smooth muscle contraction or proliferation or diseases associated with cysteine-containing proteins, or patients requiring a nitric oxide (NO) donor and elevated blood pressure, or cardiovascular syndrome Providing prevention or treatment of Patients having or at risk for pathological conditions involving smooth muscle contraction or proliferation or cysteine-containing proteins are administered a therapeutically effective amount of a NO donor and the NO. Donors are insufficient to acutely reduce mean arterial blood pressure or pulmonary artery pressure by more than 10%. A related method of increasing NO donor dosage without acutely reducing mean arterial blood pressure involves administering a NO donor to a patient's artery. In another method, a patient having or at risk for cardiovascular syndrome is administered a therapeutically effective amount of thiol that does not acutely affect blood pressure to a significant extent.
