A method of administering a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist to a patient receiving a long-term AP regimen. The present invention relates generally to the field of psychiatry. In particular, the present invention relates to the discovery that agents that can inhibit the binding of cortisol to its receptor can be used in methods for preventing antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Mifepristone, a potent specific glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, can be used in these methods. The invention also provides kits for preventing AP-induced weight gain in humans, including glucocorticoid receptor antagonists and instructional materials that teach indications, glucocorticoid receptor antagonist dosages and dosing schedules.
