Disclosed is a method for administering a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist to treat a patient diagnosed with a stress disorder. The present invention provides a method for ameliorating symptoms of stress disorder in patients having normal or reduced cortisol levels. The method includes the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist to a patient that can be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, or short-term psychotic disorder with significant stressors. In one embodiment of the invention, a method of treating a stress disorder uses a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist comprising a steroid skeleton having a moiety comprising at least one phenyl at position 11β of the steroid skeleton.
