A catalyst for a ring-opening cross-metathesis reaction between a cycloolefinic substrate and a second olefinic reactant is provided. The catalyst used is a transition metal alkylidene complex substituted with an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand. The substrate is selected such that the second olefinic reactant cross-metathesis reaction rate k CM is greater than or equal to the ring-opening metathesis reaction rate k RO . In this method, the main ROCM product is not a polymer but a monomer, dimer, and / or oligomer. The present invention further provides for the selective production of differently terminated olefinic products and / or a cross-metathesis reaction following the initial ROCM step using a trisubstituted cycloolefin as a substrate.
