A plastic medical article, such as a catheter or blood collection tube, is coated with a crosslinked hydrogel that is permanently bonded to the inner wall of the tube. The hydrophilic surface provided by the hydrogel prevents blood components from adhering to the surface, and the permanent attachment of the hydrogel prevents removal of the hydrogel by the blood.
