Compositions and methods for treating viral infections |
abstract |
The present invention provides a method for identifying neutralizing regions of viral proteins that do not induce an immune response in humans when encountering infection or exposure to the environment, but do induce an immune response in non-human mammals. (A) extracting an HIV protein from a lysate of an HIV strain; (B) immunizing a non-human animal with the extract; (C) obtaining an antiserum from the immunized mammal; (D) using the antiserum in a competitive immunoassay with human HIV antiserum to identify regions of the HIV protein that are recognized by the antiserum but not by antibodies in the human antiserum; and (e ) Determining a region where the region is a neutralization or inactivation region.
