abstract A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal optical element having good light resistance to blue laser light is provided. Further, an optical head device provided with the liquid crystal optical element obtained thereby is provided. A polymer liquid crystal film is formed on a substrate, and then the polymer liquid crystal film is subjected to plasma etching to form an uneven shape. Next, the active species generated in the polymer liquid crystal film by plasma etching is reacted with a silane coupling agent. Thereafter, an isotropic filler having a refractive index substantially equal to the ordinary light refractive index or extraordinary light refractive index of the polymer liquid crystal film, or a refractive index corresponding to the ordinary light refractive index of the polymer liquid crystal film is formed in the concave and convex shapes. A liquid crystal substantially equal to the ordinary refractive index is filled. [Selection] Figure 1
