abstract The present invention provides an electrolyte for a fuel cell that is useful as an electrolyte for a fuel cell that is a constituent material of a solid polymer fuel cell or a direct methanol fuel cell, and has excellent proton conductivity and handling properties. The repeating unit showing proton conductivity is composed of a copolymer of a hydrocarbon having a main chain of hydrocarbon and having a fluoroalkylsulfonic acid group in the side chain and a repeating unit not showing proton conductivity. Fuel cell electrolyte. The ratio (mol%) of the repeat unit is such that the repeat unit not showing proton conductivity is in the range of 0 to 20 with respect to the repeat unit 1 showing proton conductivity, and the weight average molecular weight is 10,000 to 200,000.
