PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen generating material composition and a method for producing hydrogen which can easily control a hydrogen generating reaction. SOLUTION: Hydrogen containing a specific metal powder and a hydrophilic-hydrophobic thermoreversible polymer exhibiting hydrophilicity at a predetermined transition temperature or lower in the presence of water and exhibiting hydrophobicity when exceeding the transition temperature The hydrogen generating material composition and water containing the hydrogen generating material composition containing the specific metal powder and the hydrophilic-hydrophobic thermoreversible polymer are reacted with the hydrogen generating material composition and water.
