In the present invention, as an active metal, ruthenium alone or ruthenium and at least one other transition metal of Group IB, VIIB or VIII (CAS type) together as a carrier component. Coated catalyst comprising a support comprising silicon dioxide, a process for producing such a coated catalyst, and using the coated catalyst of the present invention to hydrogenate an organic compound containing a hydrogenatable group, preferably a carbocyclic fragrance A method of hydrogenating a group of the group to a corresponding carbocyclic aliphatic group or hydrogenating an aldehyde to a corresponding alcohol, and further, the coated catalyst of the present invention is converted to an organic compound containing a hydrogenatable group. It relates to the use when hydrogenating, preferably hydrogenating a carbocyclic aromatic group to the corresponding carbocyclic aliphatic group or hydrogenating an aldehyde to the corresponding alcohol.
