A method and apparatus for assessing a bone of a subject, eg, fracture risk, wherein a test probe is inserted through the subject's skin so that the test probe contacts the subject's bone and is The resistance of the examined bone to a microscopic fracture is determined. Microscopic fracture risk is assessed by measuring bone resistance to microscopic fractures caused by the test probe. Microscopic fractures are so small that they impose negligible health risks. The device can also be useful when characterizing other materials, especially when it is necessary to penetrate a layer to obtain the material being characterized. |
