titleOfInvention Catheter assembly with bactericidal effect
abstract Disclosed is the use in medical devices as an antibacterial agent of at least one salt of an organic acid, preferably benzoate or sorbate. In particular, the use of at least one salt of an organic acid, preferably a benzoate or sorbate, in a medical device as an antibacterial agent is disclosed to produce an antibacterial coating for the medical device to prevent bacterial infections. This is very useful in medical devices having a hydrophilic coating such as, for example, a hydrophilic urinary catheter. More preferably, the pH of the hydrophilic coating is controlled to be in the range of 4.0 to 8.0, preferably 5.0 to 6.0. It is also preferable to control the hydrophilic coating so that the pH is lower than 7.0. The pH of the hydrophilic coating can be controlled by a pH buffer, preferably by a citrate or phosphate buffer. In particular, it has been found that the use of organic acid salts in combination with a pH buffer is surprisingly effective for inhibiting bacterial growth and for preventing bacterial infections.
