abstract | A method of atomizing and deoxidizing a noble metal alloy or master alloy includes: (a) producing a precursor melt consisting essentially of noble metal alloy or master alloy components and inevitable impurities; and (b) a precursor. Dispersing a compound selected from the group consisting of boron-containing metal hydrides, boron-containing metal fluorides, and mixtures thereof throughout the melt; and (c) a noble metal alloy of the melt containing boron. Or a step 20 of solidifying the master alloy. One suitable compound is solid sodium borohydride (sodium tetrahydroborate). In order to minimize the evaporation of boron in contact with the precursor alloy melt, the sodium borohydride can be encased in a metal foil formed from a noble metal alloy or master alloy component. Cast noble metal alloys or master alloys have been found to reduce hard spot count and silicon contamination compared to conventional casting methods. |
