titleOfInvention Branched alkyl oligosaccharides for liquid crystals and other related applications
abstract The glycolipid of the branched oligosaccharide according to the present invention is composed of a first 2-position branched alcohol and an oligosaccharide covalently bonded to the alcohol by an α bond or β bond (as shown in Chemical Formulas I and II). These compounds exhibit a particularly interesting phase behavior not seen from the corresponding linear equivalent. Its features are that liquid crystal is observed at atmospheric temperature and a multi-phase thermotropic liquid crystal phase. The latter may be particularly interesting in connection with applications in the life sciences field, for example liposomes for drug delivery. Depending on how the sugar head group and the alkyl group are selected, the application requirements will be satisfied (for cosmetic applications such as cosmetic creams, water is limited in water during the production of artificial membranes due to its complete water solubility. The swelling with water can be adjusted to various levels. Branched alkyl oligosaccharides are also a valuable subject in biochemical research fields such as cell membrane research because of their structural similarity to natural lipids. The possible application range of branched-chain oligosaccharide glycolipids ranges widely, for example, from liquid crystals in material science such as optical switches, surfactants, and life science fields (see above).
