titleOfInvention End cap assembly and ventilation for high power batteries
abstract An end cap assembly for closing and sealing an open end of a battery housing and a ventilation system therein. The end cap assembly includes a sealing disk that resides under the end cap, and a metal support disk between the end cap and the sealing disk. The metal support disk has a plurality of first ventilation openings and a plurality of second ventilation openings through the surface thereof. The first vent opening is spaced along a track located at a greater distance from the central longitudinal axis of the metal support disk than the second vent opening. The insulating sealing disk may have a thin portion forming therein a rupturable membrane surrounding the central hub of the sealing disk. The insulating sealing disk can have a protrusion protruding from its upper surface to change the direction of the ruptured film. The ventilation system quickly releases the internal gas from the battery in case of excessive or short circuit discharge.
