The present invention relates to flame retardant compositions for making flame retardant plastics, such as polyolefins such as polypropylene and polyethylene, and copolymers such as polyethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). The present invention provides at least one organic phosphorus compound having at least one carbon-phosphorus covalent bond and at least one carboxyl functional group, at least one selected from organic compounds containing at least one nitrogen atom. A foam-boiling flame retardant for plastics, and more particularly for polyolefins, is provided comprising an expansion agent as well as at least one inorganic structuring agent that does not decompose during combustion of the material. The inorganic structuring agent is selected from the group consisting of silicon compounds such as silicates and silicon oxides. |
