System and method for transcutaneous sampling, wherein the system and method are adapted to provide a voltage pulse that allows at least a pair of sample electrodes to form a capillary opening in the stratum corneum of a subject. The By applying a series of voltage pulses to the stratum corneum of interest, by forming capillary openings in many stratum corneum, and at least a portion of at least one of the sample electrodes is interstitial fluid from the capillary openings.
