abstract The present invention relates to a monitoring system for detecting a ground fault in a power supply network, and the system includes a plurality of monitoring devices attached to several monitoring positions, and each of the monitoring devices has a power harmonic. A detector for detecting the wave level is provided. The harmonic level is preferably detected in a predetermined frequency range. The monitoring device further comprises a memory device for holding the harmonic reference value, and further comprises a processor for comparing the harmonic level with the reference level. The monitoring device further comprises a communication device for transmitting an alarm when the level of the harmonics exceeds the reference level over a specified time period.
